Uses and Classification of Aerial LiDAR

geospatial services 2

LiDAR or Light Detection and Ranging technology is expected to create explosive shifts in the aerial mapping industry in 2020. It utilizes calibrated laser returns returning from the surface of the Earth -as reflected to GPS-monitored aircrafts flying overhead – for its performance. The aircrafts are equipped with IMU and positional sensors for this purpose. Aerial LiDAR technology is capable of producing more scalable and result-oriented solutions in comparison to the traditional photogrammetric techniques used earlier on. Read on to know more about the classification and uses of Aerial LiDAR in today’s mapping scenario.

Uses of Aerial LiDAR

These days, airborne machines and drones are loaded with LiDAR sensors for capturing data for 3D point cloud topography models. Drones with LiDAR scanners are used for surveying remote regions and rough terrains. The primary applications of Aerial LiDAR are found in case of:

  1. Land and topographical surveys
  2. Aerial LiDAR scanners are useful for developing a digital elevation model (DEM) or digital terrain model (DTM). Raw data is accumulated with the help of an aircraft, helicopter, or drone according to the area that needs to be surveyed. For instance, drones are a faster, safer, and more economical choice for surveying small terrains.

  3. Inspection of power grids and lines
  4. Besides detailing information on electric lines, point clouds are helpful in determining the distance between electric poles. The results of Aerial LiDAR surveys help in the analysis of the layout of power line corridors. This involves aerial surveys of roads, houses, vegetations and other topographical hazards to determine any potential risks.

  5. Precision and topography agriculture
  6. Farmlands using expensive fertilizers can be identified through Aerial LiDAR pictures to increase their productivity metrics. Such images also come in handy for precision forestry. Accurate identification of specific forested areas helps in reducing costs, preserving environmental assets, and increasing the productivity of precision agriculture.

  7. Other uses of Aerial LiDAR

Topographic and bathymetric surveys are used for surveying large terrains, ocean floors and river beds. Near-infrared lasers and water-penetrating light are used for topographic and bathymetric LiDAR maps respectively. Besides, ore extraction spaces in mines are calculated with the help of Aerial LiDAR data and scan reports. Related maps and LiDAR images are utilized for mine surveys.

Classification of Aerial LiDAR

At SBL, we combine automatic classification routines as macros to facilitate batch processing. For instance, when batches have to be processed outside MicroStation, TerraScan, or via workstations over LAN, then our team combines them with TerraSlave macros for more effective processing. We are also adept at handling several other LiDAR processing software like cloud compare, Computree, Global Mapper (LiDAR module), and so forth.

For instance, TerraScan, belonging to the Terrasolid Software family, is an important application for the management of our LiDAR point clouds. Along with controlling and processing point clouds, we provide several projects and import structuring tools. These tools help in the gathering and handling of various points of laser scanning campaigns and their trajectory data.

Our Aerial LiDAR experts use several other classification routines to facilitate the automatic filtering of point clouds. The resultant classifications are further refined with manual and half-automatic classification tools that are combined with 3D point cloud choices for visualization.
